Social Worker of the Year
Katherine Walker, AVASW Social Worker of the 4th Quarter, is from the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System. Ms. Walker obtained her MSW from Southern Mississippi University after serving 13 years in the Navy as a diesel mechanic. She developed a passion for social work while in the NAVY. Ms. Walker was assigned a collateral duty as the Sexual Assault Victim Intervention (SAVI) advocate. Ms. Walker had several trainers and mentors who were social workers. She shared, “I found being an advocate rewarding.”
Ms. Walker has been employed at the Biloxi VA for 4 years as a HUD-VASH Case Manager. She completed an internship at the New Orleans VA during her MSW education. In her nomination for AVASW Social Worker of the Quarter, it was noted “Katherine Walker epitomizes the perfect VA social worker in so many ways: she is smart and capable, she has plenty of energy that she brings to the job, she displays great compassion for the veterans with whom she works, and she has the desire to do a great job. Ms. Walker possesses a unique mix of wonderful qualities: she is empathetic yet practical, results-driven, yet kind. She represents the social work profession and the VA in the best way possible: through her professionalism, her advocacy, and concern about her fellow veterans.”
Ms. Walker shared, “I find working for the VA as an opportunity to give back to my community as well as those that I served with. I appreciate the VA system as a whole. It is our job is to help Veterans navigate the system”. Ms. Walker joined the AVASW two years ago and appreciates the resources/connections to other social workers at the VA.
From the several nominations for Social Worker of the 4th Quarter 2018, Katherine was selected as the AVASW Social Worker of the 4th Quarter. Congratulations to Katherine for her exceptional service to Veterans, colleagues, and her community!
